Friedman also revealed that Marner has signed an eight-year contract worth $12 million annually.
The return for Toronto has yet to be revealed, but speculation from rumors over the last 48 hours suggests that Nic Roy is the likely player going to the Maple Leafs.
The writing for Marner to Vegas has been on the wall for some time now, with the superstar willing to waive his no-move clause in two instances to the Golden Knights. The most recent trade rumors suggest a three-way trade, where Marner would have gone to Vegas while Toronto would have received forward Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes. The trade fell through, however, reportedly due to the Leafs wanting center William Karlsson in return.
Marner undoubtedly brings excitement to the Golden Knights for next season, but his run with his hometown Maple Leafs ends with some measure of disappointment.
The native of nearby Markham, Ont., Marner has dazzled in the regular season, with his 741 points being the fifth-most in Maple Leafs history. However, despite the talent in Toronto, Marner and the vaunted ‘Core Four’ were never able to make it out of the second round. Now away from the pressure-packed environment of Toronto, perhaps the best is yet to come for Marner in Vegas.
The Golden Knights have come to play this upcoming season, and they now have the superstar forward they have long coveted.
