Mitch Marner’s decision to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs via a sign-and-trade deal to the Vegas Golden Knights came against the advice of his longtime agent, Darren Ferris.
Speaking on the "100% Hockey With Millard & Shannon" podcast, Ferris admitted he preferred his client to enter free agency to maximize his options as the best player available in the market.
"I wanted that to go to free agency and do the whole 'dog and pony show,' but he didn’t want to do it," Ferris said. "I was all set to do it, but we did end up getting a result that he’s happy with."

Ferris explained that, from his side as a player agent, testing the open market would have been ideal for him and, potentially, for Marner too.
"From my perspective as an agent, I would have preferred him to go through the full process, sit down with multiple teams, and explore every option," Ferris said. "But for him, it was clear he didn't want to go through that 'dog and pony show' or go to free agency when he already knew where he wanted to be."
As Marner cited himself during his first public comments as a Golden Knights player from Canada's pre-Olympics training camp, family reasons and a healthy environment played a key role in his decision.
"He heard directly from other players about Vegas and how they treat the players and their families, too. And once he knew that, his mind was made up at the end of the season," Ferris explained. "Safety for his family and being in the right environment mattered most.
"My job at that point was simply to support his decision and help him get there. At the end of the day, his focus is now entirely on what's ahead, and he believes Vegas is the right place for him. His energy is on helping that team win."
Marner signed an eight-year, $96 million contract as part of the move to Vegas, and explained his decision to choose the Golden Knights before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
“It was really a no-brainer for us,” Marner said. “We’re looking for a new peaceful way of life, and we’re going to enjoy watching our son grow up outside more.”
The star forward already said during his introductory press conference that Vegas was "the place we wanted to be," referring to his and his wife's favorite destination.
