Mitch Marner left the Maple Leafs this off-season, and now he reveals why he turned down the chance to leave them to Carolina at the trade deadline.

This off-season has been a wild one for Mitch Marner, and after his recent interview enraged fans on social media, it's safe to say that his return to Toronto isn't going to be very well received.

However, there was the chance for this to be very different, as Marner was brought up in a 1 for 1 trade involving Mikko Rantanen and the Carolina Hurricanes at the trade deadline, a deal in which Marner shut down with his no-trade clause.

Inside Marner's Decision to Stay Committed to the Maple Leafs

Now, the Vegas Golden Knights star opened up on his decision to turn down that deal, revealing exactly why he refused to be traded mid-season to the contending Hurricanes.

'The whole Carolina thing comes up in the middle of the season. It's a bit of an awkward one. My wife was six or seven months pregnant, we really didn't want to be a deadline player.

I would have had to leave and go back to Toronto because my wife wasn't coming down with me, so I was moving into Carolina myself if I did that. The logistics of it and everything, it just didn't make sense and then from that point on, we told [the Maple Leafs] we were committed to [Toronto] and we were going to play it all out.'

How Personal Life Impacted Trade Talk Between Toronto and Carolina

Unsurprisingly, Marner reveals that the reason behind turning down the deal was due to his wife being six or seven months pregnant, and given the work that it takes to move during a season and to adapt to a playoff run on a new team, it's certainly an understandable reason.

Then, on top of that, Marner got to free agency and had his choice of where to go, as he clearly had his eyes set on the Golden Knights, and with his wife now safely giving birth, the entire situation makes complete sense for the veteran star.
