After back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals losses, Connor McDavid has unfinished business in Edmonton, but his latest comments have raised many eyebrows as there has been a hint his future may lay beyond the Oilers.
The Edmonton Oilers have been fortunate enough to have Connor McDavid leading the way for the past decade, and while he's closing in on 29-years of age, the future with him is still incredibly bright.
But what about a future without Connor McDavid? That's a question that's been asked following their back-to-back losses in the Stanley Cup Finals, with the superstar forward hitting free agency in the summer of 2026.
Now, those worries have only intensified after McDavid's latest interview, and while it's clear he wants to finish off a Stanley Cup victory in Edmonton, it appears that the reality of him potentially leaving may finally be sinking in.
'We're holding this together, trying to get it over the finish line. With that being said, ultimately still need to do what's best for me and my family, and that's who you have to take care of first.'
This is the last thing that Oilers fans want to hear, and while 97 has an amazing connection with Leon Draisaitl, if he looks around and doesn't believe this is a team that can win, there's always a chance that he sees free agency as his best shot to win a Stanley Cup.
Ultimately, McDavid is still under contract for 2025/26, so we won't know what his plans are for quite some time, but if he doesn't ink an extension this summer and the team can't get it done a year from now, free agency in 2026 may be the most chaotic off-season in NHL history.
