On Monday evening, the New Jersey Devils revealed that they have parted ways with general manager (GM) Tom Fitzgerald. Managing partner David Blitzer made the announcement on behalf of the organization, claiming that it’s time for the team to go in a different direction.
His statement included praise for Fitzgerald’s tenure and acknowledged a few of the GM’s accomplishments. “Tom changed the trajectory of our team here, including setting a franchise record for points in a season and helping make New Jersey a hockey destination. He is a well-respected leader across the Devils’ organization and NHL, and I am grateful for our friendship,” said Blitzer.
Fitzgerald joined the franchise as interim GM in January 2020, following the firing of the late Ray Shero. He was officially promoted to executive vice president and GM in July 2020. By January 2024, he would become president of hockey operations.
Despite leading the team to the playoffs twice during his tenure, Fitzgerald has received ample criticism in recent years. From questionable extensions to countless no-trade clauses, many fans were unhappy with this season’s outcome — especially since the Devils currently sit in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division.
Fitzgerald expressed his gratitude to the organization, reflecting on what it meant to be a part of New Jersey’s franchise. “The Devils are fortunate to have a core of great players, vocal and passionate fans, but most importantly, tremendous people who worked with me toward a common goal…I look forward to the next step in my hockey career and will always look back fondly on my time with the Devils,” said Fitzgerald.
With just five games remaining in the season, the Devils are in desperate need of a retool during the offseason. They have ample talent on their roster, but must find better ways to complement core players. It will be interesting to see what the next few weeks will have in store for New Jersey.
