After the Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Gannon Laroque from the San Jose Sharks for Carey Price's contract, concerns about his health are arising.
The Carey Price era is officially over with the Montreal Canadiens, as the final year of his contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $10.5 million was traded to the San Jose Sharks today.
Montreal received defenseman Gannon Laroque and a 5th round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft in return.
There are already concerns growing about Laroque's future with the Canadiens thanks to an ongoing hip issue.
He missed all of last year rehabilitating his hip injury that initially caused him to miss almost all of the 2022-23 season after undergoing double hip surgery.
Right now, his future seems completely up in the air and there's no guarantee if he'll eventually play for Montreal.
The highest number of games he's most recently played was 63 in 2021-22 with the Victoria Royals in the WHL; he had 52 points (10G, 42A).
He's not played more than 9 games in a year since splitting 2023-24 between the San Jose Barracuda and Wichita Thunder.
The return Montreal got for Price is interesting, as many believed that they could fetch a higher draft pick in return or maybe a more intriguing prospect.
Price was never going to play again for Montreal, so that was never in question. But if Laroque doesn't eventually play for the Canadiens, many will be left wondering if they made the right move.
