New York Rangers Lose 6-Foot-2 Talented Forward to Canadian Team

The New York Rangers have had to say goodbye to one of their talented young forwards, as he has decided to leave the team and sign with the Ottawa Senators.

Free agent right winger Arthur Kaliyev heads to Ottawa, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. The terms of the contract have not yet been released.

Kaliyev split time in the last season between the Rangers and Kings but wasn't tendered a qualifying offer by New York and became an unrestricted free agent.

He appeared in only 14 games for the Rangers after being acquired by them via waivers in January, scoring three goals and one assist while logging an average of 11:13 of ice time.

He also missed the final month of the season due to an upper-body injury. The Rangers didn't have a full view of Kaliyev, who showed flashes early in his career.

A 2019 second-rounder, he has shooting and was a good depth goal scorer in Los Angeles. Defensive issues led to sporadic use, though.

Kaliyev has good numbers when considering he doesn't get much ice time

He averages 15 goals and 30 points per 82 games, and has scored a total of 38 goals and added 37 assists in 202 NHL games despite his light usage.

Now, the Senators are betting low on his upside. Apart from signing veteran center Lars Eller to a one-year deal, Ottawa has been quiet on the forward front.

They're looking at Kaliyev to emulate the production of Adam Gaudette, who scored 19 goals last season in a fourth-line capacity before signing with San Jose for two years and $4 million.
