New York has opened the 2026-27 campaign with a 6-2-0 record, its best start since beginning the 2024-25 season 6-1-1 through eight games.

The Rangers suffered a significant setback last Saturday when they learned Igor Shesterkin would miss the remainder of the season after sustaining an injury in Friday’s 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals.

However, rather than letting the news derail their season, New York has responded with consecutive victories.

The Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 on Sunday before earning a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. Those victories showcased two players who could play major roles in determining how far New York goes this season: goaltender Dylan Garand and forward Alexis Lafrenière.

Dylan Garand Emerging as the Rangers’ Answer in Net

When Igor Shesterkin’s season-ending injury was confirmed, questions immediately began about how the New York Rangers would replace one of the NHL’s top goalies. However, Dylan Garand is making a strong case that the solution could already be within the organization.

Through his first four appearances, Garand is 3-1-0 with a 1.15 goals-against average, a .951 save percentage, and one shutout. He helped New York secure consecutive victories over the Vancouver Canucks and Tampa Bay Lightning, stopping 19 of 21 shots Sunday before turning aside 25 of 26 on Tuesday.

Garand currently ranks second in the NHL in both goals-against average and save percentage. His early production is impressive, but the biggest question remains whether he can sustain it throughout an extended stretch.

Garand has yet to face 30 shots in a game this season. While that reflects well on New York’s defensive structure, tougher tests are inevitable. How he responds when opponents generate more offensive pressure will provide a better indication of his long-term potential.

For now, Rangers fans have reason to be encouraged.

Garand’s emergence brings to mind Brandon Bussi’s rise with the Carolina Hurricanes last season. Both goaltenders received opportunities amid questions about their ability to handle an NHL workload and responded by making the most of their chances.

The comparison does not guarantee Garand will follow Bussi’s path, but it shows how an unexpected opportunity can change a goaltender’s trajectory.

New York does not need Garand to be Shesterkin. They just need him to be dependable to remain competitive, and through four appearances, Garand is giving the Rangers reason to believe they can weather the storm.

Alexis Lafrenière Heating Up at the Perfect Time

While Garand has stabilized the crease, Lafrenière has become a major catalyst for New York’s offense.

The forward went without a point in the Rangers’ first three games of the season. Since then, however, he has been red hot offensively, averaging two points per game over his subsequent five contests.

Lafrenière recorded a hat trick against the Islanders last Tuesday and has continued finding the back of the net. He scored New York’s lone goal in Friday’s loss to Washington, added another in Sunday’s win over Vancouver, and recorded two goals against Tampa Bay.

Through eight games, Lafrenière has recorded 10 points on seven goals and three assists, while posting a plus-six rating. He is tied for second in the NHL in goals and tied for 12th in points.

That production is precisely what New York needs following Shesterkin’s injury. Garand can give the Rangers a chance to win, but the team must provide enough offensive support to capitalize on his performances.

Lafrenière’s recent surge has helped accomplish that objective. His ability to produce consistently could become one of the defining factors in the Rangers’ attempt to remain in the playoff picture.

If he continues scoring at this pace, New York could have a much more dangerous offense than opponents anticipated entering the season.

Rangers Face a Crucial Stretch on the Road

The Rangers’ upcoming schedule will provide another test for this emerging tandem. New York will play four of its next five games on the road, beginning with Thursday’s matchup against the New Jersey Devils, where Garand is the confirmed starter.

The Rangers will then travel to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets on Saturday before returning home Monday to host the Anaheim Ducks. Their road trip resumes Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs and concludes Saturday against the Ottawa Senators.

This stretch will test both Garand’s ability to handle a growing workload and Lafrenière’s capacity to maintain his offensive production. It will also challenge the Rangers’ defensive structure as they navigate a demanding schedule without Shesterkin.

The early results are encouraging, but the next several games could reveal more about New York’s long-term outlook.

Can Garand and Lafrenière Keep New York Competitive?

The Rangers could have easily watched their season unravel following the loss of Shesterkin. Instead, they have responded with two convincing victories, receiving excellent goaltending from Garand and a timely offensive surge from Lafrenière.

There are still legitimate questions surrounding the sustainability of Garand’s numbers. His limited workload and small sample size make it too early to assume he can replicate this production throughout an entire season. Likewise, Lafrenière will need to maintain his scoring touch rather than rely on a brief hot streak.

However, the combination is giving New York something it desperately needs: hope.

If Garand continues making timely saves and Lafrenière remains a consistent offensive threat, the Rangers could prove more resilient than expected. They do not need Garand to become Shesterkin overnight. They need him to provide dependable goaltending while the rest of the roster does its part.

The Rangers’ season will ultimately be defined by how they respond to adversity, but Garand and Lafrenière are already giving them a reason to believe they can weather the storm.
