Ilya Sorokin was revealed to be in trade talks around the 2025 NHL Draft, but now his agent Dan Milstein has completely shut down any speculation of a trade.
The New York Islanders had one of the best drafts of any team in the NHL in 2025, landing Matthew Schaefer, Viktor Eklund and Kashawn Aitcheson in what might end up being a generational haul for the team.
According to reports shortly after the draft, they almost made another shocking move, with rumours emerging that the team almost moved goaltender Ilya Sorokin in an attempt to get back into the top-five to land New York native James Hagens.
Reportedly, they were trying to do business with the Utah Mammoth at No. 4 overall, but nothing ever came to fruition, and now the off-season continues with question marks over the veteran star.
Now, Sorokin's agent Dan Milstein has cleared up the speculation, noting that at no point has there ever been trade talks centred around the star goaltender who also happens to have a full no-movement clause.
Ilya Sorokin has a full no-trade clause and has never been part of any trade discussions - not at any point. Surprised this needs correcting, but here we are. There's a difference between reporting facts and creating buzz around yourself.
While insiders can sometimes get information wrong, coming from Sorokin's agent, there's no reason to doubt his statement here, as it's likely that some rumours emerged and whoever began the rumour simply ran with the speculation he heard, but Milstein confirms there's no legitimacy to them.
Despite the Islanders looking to get younger behind their incredible 2025 NHL Draft haul, this is still a team with plenty of talent, and if Sorokin can get back to career best form in 2025/26, this will still be a very dangerous team, so don't expect them to move Sorokin anytime soon.
