NHL analyst Matt Levine believes that veteran forward Max Pacioretty will sign with the Edmonton Oilers before the season starts, and he would replace Corey Perry.
After another heartbreaking defeat in the Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers entered the offseason with more questions than answers.
The team's roster from l ast year finally achieved the balance of offense, defense, and goaltending to contend, but still failed to win the championship.
Most expected Edmonton to be agitated this off-season, but the club has been surprisingly silent. Instead of making moves, they've lost depth throughout the roster, and with the Western Conference still stacked, fears are growing.
To make matters worse, Connor McDavid is just a year away from free agency, putting that much more stress on the front office to build a winner in the very near future.
One of the players who can help address the Oilers' depth problem is experienced forward Max Pacioretty, and NHL analyst Matt Levine predicts he will sign with the Oilers.
'Max Pacioretty signs with (the) Edmonton Oilers .'- Matt Levine
The 36-year-old had a season plagued by injury playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, suiting up for only 37 games and collecting five goals and eight assists.
His recent play has lowered his value, but when healthy, Max Pacioretty still has the ability to be a game-changer.
For Edmonton, the math is simple. Pacioretty could play the same role Corey Perry filled last season, providing secondary scoring, veteran presence, and playoff experience.
With Perry now an LA King, the Oilers need someone to provide leadership and stability in the bottom six.
While rumors of retirement have circulated, Pacioretty has also expressed a willingness to play for one more year. For a player still searching for his first Stanley Cup, Edmonton could be the place to be.
Edmonton needs depth, leadership, and playoff-proven smarts, and Pacioretty can provide all three if he can stay on the ice.
