NHL Announces Punishment for Canucks Player After Connor McDavid Incident

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers found himself in the eye of the NHL after spearing Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid during Saturday's matchup.

The NHL announced on Sunday that the league has fined Myers $2,500 for his slashing of McDavid in the groin, a decision that was a bit surprising because of the tiny financial fine the NHL placed on the blueliner.

The hit came midway through the third period, when McDavid skated toward the net without the puck. Myers turned and swung his stick upward between McDavid’s legs, striking the Oilers captain with enough force to lift him off the ice.

The play went unnoticed by officials and drew no penalty, though the 6-foot-8 defenseman was called for delay of the game less than a minute later.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety issued the fine Sunday afternoon, calling it a “slash” at 8:25 of the third period.

Considering Myers' actions, the punishment could be considered a bit too lenient for what appeared to be an intentional low blow against one of the league’s most prominent players. Myers makes $3 million per season, meaning the fine represents less than one-tenth of one percent of his annual salary.

That said, the $2,500 Myers was fined is the maximum amount allowed for the indiscretion under the collective bargaining agreement. The fine proceeds will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Earlier in Saturday's game, Myers already tangled with McDavid near the crease, later took a heavy hit from Leon Draisaitl, and delivered one himself on Trent Frederic.

On his way to serve his minor penalty, Myers even clipped an on-ice official in the head.

McDavid, who stayed composed despite the incident, went on to finish the game with an assist in 24:29 of playing time, helping seal Edmonton’s first win of the season 3-1.

The two teams are set to meet again on Oct. 26 in Vancouver. Myers will be back in action with the Canucks on Monday as they take on the St. Louis Blues.
