NHL Experts Agree on Potential Price of Jack Eichel's Golden Knights Extension

The Vegas Golden Knights are entering the final stretch of their offseason business with contract negotiations still ongoing for top center Jack Eichel.

The 28-year-old is in the last season of his eight-year, $80 million contract signed while he was still in Buffalo with the Sabres. The Golden Knights and Eichel's team are working toward a long-term extension.

Eichel is coming off a career year with Vegas, scoring 28 goals and providing 66 assists for the Golden Knights, helping them into the postseason. Once there, he added 10 points in 11 outings before Vegas crashed out in the second round.

Judging by the latest reports from multiple NHL analysts, everything points toward an agreement being reached eventually, albeit for slightly more money than initially believed.

According to Bleacher Report's Frank Seravalli, the expectation remains that Eichel will stay in Vegas. That said, Seravalli reported that following Kirill Kaprizov's historic extension with the Minnesota Wild, Eichel's deal is projected to get into the $14 million-per-season range.

“He’s not signing somewhere else — they’ve got him, so it’s probably gonna end up in that $13-$13.5 [million range], maybe [Kaprizov] pushes it to $14,” Seravalli said.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period echoed that projection while speaking on "The Sheet with Jeff Marek" on Thursday, noting that while negotiations have been “relatively slow,” the final number is likely to start with $14 million per year if the contract runs the full eight-year term Eichel is eligible for.

“I think the hang-up’s been term,” Pagnotta said. “I think the number is going to be in and around that $14 million mark if they go full term. But what I was told earlier this week is that those conversations have been relatively slow.

“He’s going to be the highest paid Knight once all is said and done, to what extent is what everybody’s waiting for.”

ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, who also appeared on the show, reported the expected contract figures, saying, “I’ve heard 8 years, $14 million– something in that neighborhood.”

Pagnotta, however, stressed that Kaprizov’s contract may not directly reset the center market, although he acknowledged its indirect influence.

“This is a different scenario. Kaprizov is a winger; he’s going to affect the winger market a lot more than just forwards in general,” Pagnotta said. “But $14 million in [non-tax states such as] Vegas, Dallas, Florida ... is not the same in Minnesota or Toronto. I fully expect it to be in that range.”

With the NHL salary cap projected to rise significantly over the next three years, insiders view the extension as inevitable.

“I think both sides are comfortable with the relationship,” Pagnotta said. “I think both sides would like to extend it. It’s just a matter of to what extent.”
