NHL Insider Drops Big Update on Artemi Panarin Future With New York Rangers

The New York Rangers have opened the new NHL season off fairly slowly, and things have looked a little bleak to start. Even with a coaching change this summer, the Rangers haven't been able to find any consistency out on the ice, and it has caused some real problems to arise early in the year.

The Rangers currently sit with a record of 3-4-1, but the offense has been a major concern so far. New York has tried to switch things up within lineups and rotations, but at least so far, things have been tough.

If these struggles continue throughout the remainder of the year, the Rangers' front office could have some tough decisions to make across the roster. All offseason, there were rumors around the team and how this season could drastically impact who remained in New York past this year.

One player that was heavily discussed in this idea was star Artemi Panarin, who is currently in the final year of his contract. Panarin has been a massive part of the success of the Rangers over the years, but due to his age (33), he could be past his prime.

The Rangers want to make a big splash at some point, and with the money from Panarin coming off the books, it opens the team to make it happen. But New York also doesn't want to lose the star for nothing, so there have been plenty of trade rumors going around, too.

Artemi Panarin Gets Update on Rangers Future

Due to the struggles that New York has seen so far, this could leave someone like Panarin on the outside looking in going forward. Entering the season, there were rumors that he could be moved if the team were to start slowly, and at least so far, this has come to fruition.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, if the star wants to remain in New York, he is going to need to put up an excellent season. Friedman appeared on the Morning Cuppa Hockey podcast to discuss the Rangers.

"If he’s gonna stay in New York, at what he wants, he’s gonna have to have the kind of year that makes them say we got to do this.”

Through the first eight games of the new season, Panarin has contributed to the Rangers, and he is off to a good start. In total, he has posted two goals and put up five assists for New York.

The Rangers could likely net some strong assets in a potential trade of Panarin, and it could see the front office make a move down the line. If anything, New York has to make a decision on what to do with him going forward, so they avoid potentially losing him for nothing in free agency next summer.

As the year goes on, the front office must decide how to proceed with Panarin and whether he is going to be part of the team down the line. New York has a nice core in place, but the team also has big goals that it wants to meet going forward.
