The Chicago Blackhawks had a season to forget in 2024-25, finishing toward the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Chicago ended the year with a record of 26-45-11, earning the second-worst record in the conference.
Due to this, the Blackhawks do have a strong chance at winning the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NHL draft. Chicago just had the first pick two years ago, and it looks like they could be back at the top of the draft board.
The Blackhawks are a proud organization, and they want to get back to competing for Stanley Cup trophies. But in order to make that happen, the team is going to need a complete overhaul.
Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report penned some trade ideas for each team that could win the No. 1 overall pick. Within the Blackhawks' idea, Yerdon believes that Chicago should look to move on from some of the veteran players on the roster.
"With guys like Levshunov, Sam Rinzel and Kevin Korchinski on defense eager to get more ice time, players such as Connor Murphy and T.J. Brodie would make a lot of sense to trade."
"It's not ideal to have a super-young group on defense and have hopes of making the playoffs, but the Blackhawks are getting close to running out of proper places to fit all of these guys into lineups at the NHL and AHL levels."
"Veterans are great to have around, but as this past season showed in Chicago, they aren't always the answer."
Chicago's front office has a lot of work to do this offseason, but their fortunes could change if they landed the No. 1 overall pick again. The Blackhawks have the second-best odds of landing the first pick, right behind the San Jose Sharks.
This should be a very interesting offseason for Chicago, and one that could dictate the remainder of the decade.
