NHL Insider Reveals Unfortunate News Regarding Pius Suter's Future With Canucks

The future is finished when it comes to Pius Suter re-signing in Vancouver, as NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal has provided a major contract update.

The Vancouver Canucks have lost out in the Pius Suter sweepstakes. As recently as yesterday, NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal reported the club was considering trading Teddy Blueger to open cap space for Suter.

Blueger, 30, has one year remaining on his $1.8 million contract and posted eight goals and 28 points in 82 games last year. But Dhaliwal then reports that Suter was close to a deal elsewhere, not with the Canucks.

Vancouver barely has half a million in cap space left

Cap room remains the largest hurdle. Vancouver retains only $556,000 of cap room, according to PuckPedia.

Suter enjoyed a career year with 25 goals and 46 points and is projected by AFP Analytics to re-sign for four years with an average annual salary of close to $5 million. When and if Vancouver does trade Blueger or another asset, it might not be enough.

'They called [Suter's] agent yesterday, and they told him they are still interested, the door is still open. They've gotta move either Joshua or Blueger to get back in on Suter. Suter is going to sign today or tomorrow.'

Another potential trade asset is Dakota Joshua. A one-time centerpiece, Joshua's stock has fallen.

'I really am hearing the Canucks are souring on Dakota Joshua for some odd reason,' Dhaliwal said. 'His name is out there.'

Off his four-year, $13-million extension following his 18-goal 2023-24 season, the 29-year-old struggled through 2024-25 with only seven goals and 14 points in 57 contests.

The Canucks are reportedly shopping him, but his $3.25 million cap hit and limited production might make him difficult to deal, especially with a 12-team no-trade clause in his deal.

Update: Suter has signed with a new team

As per NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, Suter has indeed signed a new contract with the St. Louis Blues.
