NHL Notebook: Islanders sign Tony DeAngelo to one-year deal

DeAngelo is no stranger to the New York area, as he spent parts of four seasons with the New York Rangers from 2017-18 until 2020-21. Overall, he scored 19 goals and 92 points in 167 games. The right-shot defenceman has also played for the likes of the Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Carolina Hurricanes in two separate stints.

His most recent National Hockey League experience came with the Hurricanes, scoring three goals and 11 points in 31 games with the Hurricanes in the 2023-24 season. To start the 2024-25 season, he signed with SKA St. Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League, where he scored six goals and 32 points in 34 games. Earlier this month, he and SKA St. Petersburg agreed to a mutual contract termination.

Sam Gagner signs PTO with Belleville Senators

Speaking of player signings, the Belleville Senators announced Friday morning that they’ve signed veteran Sam Gagner to a professional tryout.

Gagner was drafted sixth overall in the 2007 draft by the Edmonton Oilers, where he’s had three separate stints. He’s also played for the Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, and Winnipeg Jets in his career.

His most recent NHL season saw him score five goals and 10 points in 28 games with the Oilers. Gagner earned a tryout with the Carolina Hurricanes before the 2024-25 season but was cut before the season began. Moreover, Gagner captained Team Canada at the 2024 Spengler Cup, where he had an assist in three games as Team Canada fell in the semifinals.

The Belleville Senators currently sit 13th in the AHL’s Eastern Conference with a 15-13-5 record.

Jacob Markström sidelined 4-6 weeks with MCL sprain

Former Calgary Flame netminder Jacob Markström left Wednesday’s game with an injury. Unfortunately, he’ll be out for 4-6 weeks due to an MCL sprain.

Acquired by the New Jersey Devils from the Flames for a 2025 first round pick and Kevin Bahl, the Swedish netminder has been good this season, posting a .912 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average in 36 games played. He’s helped the team go from missing the postseason to being firmly in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 27-17-6 record with 60 points.

Another note is that Markström will miss next month’s 4 Nations Face-Off, with Philadelphia Flyers netminder Sam Ersson likely replacing the 34-year-old.
