NHL Notebook: Mammoth re-sign Jack McBain to five-year deal

Selected 63rd overall by the Minnesota Wild in 2018, but his rights were eventually traded to the Arizona Coyotes. He made his NHL debut with the Coyotes in 2021-22, shortly after his time at Boston College ended, where he scored two goals and three points in 10 games.

In his first full season in 2022-23, McBain scored 12 goals and 26 points. He matched his point total the following season, scoring eight goals and 26 points in only 67 games, the final season the franchise played in Arizona. In the first season in Utah, McBain scored 13 goals and 27 points in 82 games. Consistency is key.

The Mammoth elected salary arbitration with McBain, something the Buffalo Sabres also did with Bowen Byram. By doing so, teams weren’t able to give an offer sheet to either player.

Flyers extend Cam York

Speaking of re-signing players, early on Tuesday morning, Chris Maher reported that the Philadelphia Flyers extended Cam York to a five-year deal with a cap hit of $5.15 million.

York was selected 14th overall in the 2019 draft by the Flyers, making his professional debut during the 2020-21 season. In 2021-22, York played 30 games for the Flyers, scoring three goals and 10 points in 30 games. The 2022-23 season saw York pla a career-high 54 games with two goals and 20 points while splitting his time between the NHL and American Hockey League.

In 2023-24, York became a regular for the Flyers, scoring 10 goals and 30 points in 82 games, a career-high across the board. Last season, he played just 66 games, where he scored four goals and 17 points in 66 games.

Tyler Johnson retires

On Tuesday, Tyler Johnson announced he has retired from the sport, with the National Hockey League Players’ Association confirming that.

Spending four seasons with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, the 5’8” right-shot centre went undrafted, but eventually signed an entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. In his second full season in 2013-14, Johnson scored 29 goals and 72 points in 77 games, along with 13 goals and 23 points in 26 post-season games as the Lightning fell to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final.

Johnson eventually won the Stanley Cup; in fact, he won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Lightning in 2020 and 2021. After that, he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks, playing three seasons there, before playing nine games with the Boston Bruins in 2024-25.

For his career, Johnson scored 193 goals and 433 points in 747 games. Nine of those seasons were spent with the Lightning, where he scored 161 goals and 361 points in 589 games, along with 32 goals and 70 points in 149 games with the Blackhawks.
