The Edmonton Oilers closed out their season in San Jose with an easy 3–0 win over the Sharks, resting stars and staying healthy before their fourth consecutive playoff series against the Kings.

But it was one play in the opening period, from one of the players who didn't sit out Wednesday's game, that triggered a league-wide response on social media.

Nine minutes into the game, Connor McDavid assisted on Ty Emberson’s goal to register his 100th point of the season. The NHL was quick to capture the moment on X, posting a message announcing the meaning of McDavid's assist in the grand scheme of things.

“ Connor Mc100 Connor McDavid reaches the 100-point mark in 67 games!”

This is McDavid’s eighth career 100-point season, tying him with Marcel Dionne for the third-most in NHL history . Only Wayne Gretzky (15) and Mario Lemieux (10) have more, although McDavid already has eight such campaigns in 10 NHL seasons, while it took the other two 20 and 17 years, respectively.

It's also worth noting that McDavid has reached 100 points in 2024-25 despite appearing in just 67 games this year due to injury and suspension.

McDavid now has five consecutive 100-point campaigns. Only 13 other players have achieved such a streak, and none since Steve Yzerman posted six straight from 1987 to 1993.

On Tuesday, the NHLPA named McDavid the NHL’s "Best Overall Forward" as voted by fellow league players in the 2024-25 NHLPA Player Poll, with the Oilers star receiving 73.89% of the vote — the highest share in any category this year — according to the results released by the NHL Players’ Association.

To start the week, McDavid was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week after posting nine assists over three games in his return from injury.

The Oilers, meanwhile, enter the playoffs as the Pacific Division’s third seed and will face  the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the fourth consecutive season both teams meet in the first round, with Edmonton winning all three prior.
