The NHL is one of the world's biggest sports franchises, so the league has created an expectation for themselves and the players to uphold.

Most NHL fans expect the best representation from the league, and of course, the league has struggled to deliver at times. However, with recent reports, the league could be looking to please some of its older fan base.

According to a post on X from Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News, the NHL is reportedly considering going back to their old jersey format of white for home games and colored for away matchups.

“Exciting sartorial gossip: I'm told the NHL might switch back to white jerseys at home, dark jerseys on the road in the next CBA. But could we ever see dark on dark sometimes, I wonder? Red Detroit vs. Blue Toronto, for example,” he posted.

The NHL's current collective bargaining agreement does not expire until 2026, so the change may not happen until the 2026-27 season. The league changed from the white home jerseys and colored away jerseys to the colored-home and white-away format we see now in the 2003-04 season.

Kennedy also alluded to the thought of the league introducing the concept of color vs. color matchups.

Since the 2003-04 season, color vs. color jersey matchups have rarely been seen, except for special events such as the 2014 Winter Classic when the Toronto Maple Leafs suited up in blue while the Detroit Red Wings suited up in red.

Seeing color vs. color matchups more often, along with the possibility of the league going back to white home uniforms, could be an exciting change.
