The busy offseason for Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill has continued. As he continues to look for a new head after firing Peter DeBoer, Nill took care of some housekeeping items on Thursday.
Having to juggle the salary cap and pending free agents Matt Duchene, Jamie Benn, and Mikael Granlund, Nill was able to sign one player and trade another, but more work has to be done.
It started with getting the Matt Duchene contract out of the way. He signed him to a four-year contract extension at $4.5 million a season. Now, the final two years could be bought out if the Stars needed to. By that time, the salary cap could be in the $120 million range. But in the $95.5 million day in the age of the salary cap, he does not have much wiggle room.
The busy day to the Dallas Stars continue as they clear $4.5 million in cap space by moving Mason Marchment to Seattle
What comes next for the Stars. Ilya Lyubushkin or Matt Dumba buyout or does one get moved.
Again the last option was trading Jason Robertson #texashockey

As reported last week on Full Press Hockey, the Dallas Stars would have to move out one of Mason Marchment, who makes $4.5 million, along with Matt Dumba at $3.5 million, and Ilya Lyubushkin at $3.25 million for the next two seasons.
As Full Press Hockey mentioned earlier in the week, Dumba could be a buyout candidate for the Stars. And he could still be when the buyout window opens, but the Dallas Stars made their first move, trading Mason Marchment and his $4.5 million to the Seattle Kraken for two draft picks.

According to PuckPedia.com, the Dallas Stars have $4,955,084 in cap space for next season. There is still more work to be done, as Benn still needs a new deal. Again, Jim Nill has stated Jamie Benn will be a Dallas Star for life. He will take up a bit of money.
Has Mikael Granlund been priced out of Dallas because of the Duchene deal? It appears to be the case at this point. Mavrik Bourque could be a prime candidate for an offer sheet. It would be hard for the Dallas Stars to match it.
Nils Lundkvist is a restricted free agent, and let’s see what they decide to do with him. The Stars are going to need a defenseman, especially if Dumba and or Lyubushkin get moved out.
Of course, there are constant rumors of Jason Robertson being traded. The talk was that the Stars want to move his $7.5 million to free up cap space. From all indications that Full Press Hockey has received, the Stars aren’t looking to trade him despite teams calling about him.
There is a market for him, but it would have to take a blow-away offer to get him out of Dallas, as Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period reports. They want to re-sign as they see him as part of the core moving forward. So he isn’t available. Similar to the Brady Tkachuk situation in Ottawa. The Robertson talk is outside of the organization.
However, unlike the Florida Panthers, whom everyone says have an advantage because of no state income tax, how is that advantage helping the Dallas Stars right now? It isn’t, or else they would have an extra “$10 million” as someone said to sign players.
Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill is going to show everyone why he won back-to-back Jim Gregory Awards as GM of the Year. But it is a tricky balancing act because another player or two will have to be moved.
Not to mention, whoever he brings in as head coach has a tough job to get this roster back to the Western Conference Final for a fourth straight year. It will not be easy.
Expect the Dallas Stars to make another move or two leading into the NHL Draft next week.
