It’s time for some more NHL rumours. American Thanksgiving has come and gone, and that means the holiday season is upon us. Shoppers are looking for items to add to their wish lists, and the same goes for NHL teams. The contenders start separating themselves from the pack by the end of the calendar year. That means some teams need to fill holes on their respective rosters quickly. One club that’s been attempting to address a glaring need is the Edmonton Oilers.

Goaltending has been a major problem for the two-time defending Western Conference champions. This edition of NHL rumours deals with the Oilers’ quest to fill that void.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Edmonton Oilers Monitoring Goalie Market

Rumour: We’ll have a collection of different names being mentioned. However, our main focus will be on Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Tristan Jarry. Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman addressed his situation in a recent interview on Sportsnet 590 The Fan.

Analysis: Edmonton has gotten off to another slow start this season. However, it doesn’t seem like Stuart Skinner is the goalie who can pull the team out of their funk. Skinner has shown at times that he can be a capable goaltender. However, he’s very streaky, and the consistency hasn’t been there this season.

The Oilers don’t want to put themselves in too deep a hole before the end of 2025. This means Edmonton general manager Stan Bowman could be testing the market. The Oilers are looking at several options. Names like Jordan Binngton of the St Louis Blues and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen of the Buffalo Sabres.

However, Friedman was asked mostly about Jarry, who has rallied after going through waivers last season. The 30-year-old is being linked to the Oilers, and that was reiterated by former NHL goalie Kevin Weekes. Jarry does have a history in Edmonton due to his playing for the Oil Kings in the WHL during his major junior days.

What It Means

The Surrey, British Columbia native is 6-2, with a 2.53 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage. He also has a shutout, which has gotten Edmonton to take notice.

Arturs Silovs and Jarry have been splitting time in goal, but Pittsburgh has two young goalie prospects, Sergei Murashov and Joel Blomqvist, waiting in the wings. Both have played in the AHL, and Friedman noted that Murashov showed some ability. Trading Jarry could give either or both goalies an opportunity to audition to be the goalie of the future.

However, Friemdan added that the Oilers are concerned about Jarry’s past injuries. Injury concerns were a reason that Edmonton shied away from going after John Gibson before the Detroit Red Wings ultimately traded for him in the offseason.

One other concern is that the Penguins are still in the race to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. A goalie like Jarry could be instrumental in returning Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to the postseason. Pittsburgh and general manager Kyle Dubas would hold the hammer and try to get a big return before deciding to part with Jarry.
