Nikita Kucherov Reportedly Requests Trade From Lightning

Nikita Kucherov reportedly wants to leave the Tampa Bay Lightning, potentially setting the stage for a blockbuster involving one of the NHL’s most dangerous offensive players.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman writes that Kucherov has informed both his teammates and the Lightning organization that he will not re-sign with Tampa Bay and would like to be traded. The reasons behind his decision remain unclear. Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois and Kucherov’s agent, Dan Milstein, both declined to comment to Friedman. Neither a preferred destination nor a timeline for a potential deal was identified.

A Stunning Turn After a Franchise Milestone

The development comes shortly after Kucherov passed Steven Stamkos as Tampa Bay’s career scoring leader. His milestone assist against the Utah Mammoth on Oct. 24 brought him to 1,138 points in 890 games, surpassing Stamkos’ previous franchise record.

Kucherov also entered this season as the reigning Hart Trophy winner after recording 44 goals and 130 points in 2025–26. His continued production makes the possibility of a departure particularly significant for a Lightning team built around competing with its established core.

Tampa Bay Faces a Major Decision

Kucherov is in the final season of his eight-year, $76-million contract, and his trade request leaves BriseBois facing a franchise-altering challenge. The priority now is securing the strongest possible return, ideally one that helps the Lightning remain competitive while replacing some of the offense Kucherov’s departure would leave behind.

Any interested contender would need to weigh the acquisition cost against whether Kucherov would consider staying beyond this season. For now, the key questions are whether either side publicly addresses the report and whether Tampa Bay begins entertaining offers. A trade request would represent a major development, but it would not establish that a deal is imminent.
