TSN: Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill plans on starting contract extension talks with pending UFA forward Jason Robertson in mid to late December, according to Pierre LeBrun. He’s on a one-year deal at $12 million and not eligible to sign an extension until January 1st.
“The Stars really want to finally figure this out. They want to sign him. My understanding is Jason Robertson wants to stay in Dallas. He loves being a Dallas Star.
But at the end of the day, the original problem still exists. What’s the number that makes it work? Listen, the Stars know now, they’re going to have to go above Mikko Rantanen’s $12 million a year if they get Jason Robertson signed. The NHL landscape has changed so dramatically in terms of salaries that those days are gone where you’re trying to get him at 12 million.”

LeBrun adds, what is the rush for Robertson to sign an extension. He could see if the salary landscape changes even more. Don’t think a deal is reached by the end of January and that it will likely play out over the rest of the season.
TSN: One reason a Dallas Stars contract extension for Jason Robertson may take some time is that Robertson wouldn’t have any trade protection until the new deal kicks in on July 1st, according to Pierre LeBrun.
“And No.2, he cannot get any no-trade protection in his new deal until Jul. 1st. That’s pretty important to note. I think, we know that Thomas Harley was almost traded before his eight-year deal kicked in this year. So that’s a real thing, and it’s why this thing might go a bit longer than Dallas might hope.”
