Two days after connecting on a deal that sent Connor Murphy to Edmonton for a second-round pick in 2028, the Oilers and Blackhawks are making another trade.
Reports have confirmed that Chicago and Edmonton are completing a deal that will send veteran center Jason Dickinson at 50% retention and young forward Colton Dach to the Oilers in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick that is top-12 protected, and Andrew Mangiapane.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman was first to share the news of a trade being in the works on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday night.
“Edmonton and Chicago are discussing another move. This one would send Jason Dickinson to the Oilers. We will see how it turns out,”
The 30-year-old Dickinson is a pending UFA in the second and final year of the two-year, $8.5 million extension signed with the Blackhawks in 2024. He’s tallied 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in 47 games played this season, though is not far removed from a career-best 35-point (22 goals, 13 assists) 2023-24 campaign.
Dach, 23, is a pending RFA in year three of the three-year, $2.475 million entry-level contract signed with Chicago back in 2021. He’s spent the entire season up with the Blackhawks, having recorded nine points (three goals, six assists) across 53 games.
Dickinson projects to get a chance to claim the third-line center role in Edmonton as a big body who is very responsible defensively, exactly what the Oilers need. The offense hasn’t been there as much in recent years, but the NHL’s second-highest scoring team is doing just fine in that department, so that shouldn’t be seen as an issue.
Dach, brother of Montreal Canadians center Kirby Dach, will add some depth and youth to the forward group. It will be interesting to see what kind of opportunity he gets in Edmonton.
Chicago, on the other hand, flips another expiring contract along with a former second-round pick of theirs to acquire more draft capital while taking a flier on Mangiapane in the process.
