The Edmonton Oilers announced several changes to their coaching staff Monday morning as their off-season overhaul continues.
The most notable change will see the departure of Paul Coffey from the coaching staff, as he returns to his previous role of special advisor to ownership and hockey operations. Coffey has spent the last two seasons behind the Oilers’ bench as an assistant coach, working with the defencemen.

Oilers’ goaltending coach Dustin Schwartz wasn’t offered a contract extension, the club said, while they announced assistant coach Mark Stuart and video coach Noah Segall both received contract extensions.
Other coaching news came as the team announced the hiring of Paul McFarland as an assistant coach, Peter Aubry as a goaltending coach, and Conor Allen as a skills coach.
McFarland, 39, joins the Oilers after spending last season as the WHL Calgary Hitmen’s head coach, coaching them to a 45-17-3-3 record. He has six years of NHL experience under his belt as an assistant coach, spending two years with the Florida Panthers (2017-19), a year with the Toronto Maple Leafs (2019-20), and three years with the Seattle Kraken (2021-24). McFarland is expected to work with the Oilers power play unit, according to Bob Stauffer.
Aubrey, 48, has ties to Oilers GM Stan Bowman’s days in Chicago, having spent eight years between 2014-15 and 2022-23 as the Blackhawks’ developmental goaltending coach, and the goalie coach for their AHL affiliate. He spent the last two seasons at the NCAA’s University of Nebraska-Omaha as an associate coach. Aubrey was linked to the Oilers last week by Oilersnation’s Jason Gregor as a potential goaltending coach option.
Allen, 35, spent last season with the US National u17 team, having previously worked with the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers and Prodigy Prospects in a developmental skills role.
Schwartz departs the Oilers having spent the last 11 years as the teams goaltending coach, working with a long list of goaltenders in Edmonton including Stuart Skinner, Mikko Koskinen, Cam Talbot, Laurent Brossoit, Mike Smith, Calvin Pickard and Jack Campbell being seven of 17 who had played two or more years under Schwartz.
