The Edmonton Oilers have added another goaltender to their offseason overhaul, acquiring Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres. Edmonton also received a seventh-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft, while Buffalo acquired the Oilers' third-round selection in 2028.

The Oilers confirmed the trade on X, posting, "TRADE The #Oilers have acquired goaltender Devon Levi & a seventh-round selection in the 2028 NHL Draft from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Edmonton's third-round pick in 2028."

Levi, 24, arrives in Edmonton looking for a fresh start after spending the entire 2025-26 season with the Rochester Americans. He appeared in 52 AHL games, posting a 23-20-12 record with a 2.83 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage.

Although those numbers marked a decline from previous seasons, he remained Rochester's workhorse and delivered several standout performances.

NHL analyst Bob Stauffer believes Levi still has plenty of upside. He wrote on X, "Devon Levi had exceptional advanced analytics (GSAA) over the last 3 years in the AHL. (.904/.919/.927) SVP in the AHL. Could see @EdmontonOilers add another goalie on top of Levi."

The move addresses a position that plagued Edmonton throughout last season. The Oilers cycled through multiple goaltenders while finishing 41-30-11 before suffering a first-round playoff exit.

Team captain Connor McDavid admitted afterward, "We were an average team all year. An average team with high expectations, you're going to be disappointed."

This trade carries limited risk and meaningful upside. Levi remains under contract for one more season with an affordable $812,500 cap hit. Edmonton is betting that a change of scenery can help unlock the talent that once made him one of hockey's top goaltending prospects, but another addition in net still appears likely before training camp.
