The Edmonton Oilers remain in the Pacific Division race as the regular season winds down, with three teams still battling for the division with just two points separating them.
Coming off a 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks, the Oilers moved to 77 points on the season, just one behind the Anaheim Ducks (78) and one above the Vegas Golden Knights (76) in third place.
Edmonton has needed to rely on some balanced production across the lineup following the injury of one of their star players of late, with as many as 13 different players scoring at least one point in their win over the Sharks on Tuesday.
That injured star is Leon Draisaitl, who has been central to the Oilers' success this season by scoring 35 goals and assisting on 62 more.
Draisaitl's impact, however, won't be there for the time being following the injury he sustained in a win over the Nashville Predators, when he absorved hit in the first period and later left the game.
The Oilers had already announced that Draisaitl is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season due to the lower-body injury, with a potential return targeted for the start of the playoffs, according to general manager Stan Bowman.
On Thursday, the Oilers added a new chapter to this saga and announced the corresponding roster move tied to Draisaitl's absence.
“The #Oilers have placed forward Leon Draisaitl on long-term injured reserve & recalled forward Roby Jarventie from the @Condors on an emergency basis,” the Oilers said.

Draisaitl’s placement on long-term injured reserve will provide the Oilers with salary cap flexibility, with the franchise's LTIR pool now approaching $7 million and Edmonton having around $3.3 million in cap space.
To make up for Draisaitl's absence, the Oilers are recalling Jarventie, 21, who comes from the AHL, having 17 goals and 36 points in 52 games with the Bakersfield Condors this season.
Jarventine has appeared in seven NHL games during his career, all of them with the Ottawa Senators, and has one career point (an assist).
Edmonton returns to action Thursday against the Florida Panthers at 9 p.m. ET.
