Somewhat shockingly, Calvin Pickard has cleared waivers. Elliotte Friedman was the first to report that the Edmonton Oilers’ veteran backup has not been claimed by another NHL team. It is likely he goes down to Bakersfield of the AHL, although that might happen after the Olympic break.

Fans and teammates will be pleasantly surprised to learn that Pickard has cleared waivers. This is a player who is beloved in the dressing room. He’s the ultimate teammate, and he’s done more than earn his keep during his time with this roster that has gotten close to winning a Stanley Cup. Pickard was instrumental last season in keeping the Oilers playoff hopes alive.
Fans were ready to say goodbye to Pickard, who many fans thought deserved better than to be placed on waivers. Perhaps Edmonton knew something everyone else didn’t.
If GM Stan Bowman explored trade options and couldn’t find a taker, it might have given him the confidence to place Pickard on waivers, with the understanding that this might be the right time to take the risk.
The question will soon become, what’s next? With Connor Ungar and Matt Tomkins in the AHL and playing well, Pickard crowds the crease in Bakersfield. But the Oilers also don’t want to continue with three goalies on the main roster.
