One of the best players in the world today is being recognized for his past accomplishments.
On Thursday, the Ontario Hockey League released its Quarter-Century Team. Along with the names of current NHL superstars like John Tavares, Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid was named to the OHL Quarter-Century First Team.
The Richmond Hill, Ontario native had an incredible junior career prior to being taken first overall by the Oilers in the 2015 NHL Draft. McDavid was granted exceptional status, allowing him to enter the OHL Draft in 2012.
The Erie Otters, who had back-to-back losing seasons, took McDavid with the first overall pick. Along with the help of players like Dylan Strome and current Oilers teammate Connor Brown, the young sensation helped lead the Otters back to prominence.
With McDavid being part of the charge, Erie made it to the Eastern Conference Final in both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, advancing to the OHL Final in 2015. However, the Otters lost to the Oshawa Generals in five games, the closes McDavid came to playing in the Memorial Cup.
After posting a 66-point rookie season in 2012-13, which saw him earn the Emms Family Award as OHL Rookie of the Year, McDavid narrowly missed the century mark in year two, posting 99 points in 56 games. In his draft year, he scored a career-high 120 points in 47 games, which included him missing time to win gold with Canada at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship. McDavid added another 49 points in 20 playoff games that spring, and was named the CHL Player of the Year.
In 166 games with the Otters, McDavid scored 97 goals and 188 assists for 285 points, including another 68 points in 34 postseason appearances. He ranks fourth on the franchise’s all-time scoring list, trailing Strome (354), Alex DeBrincat (332) and Brad Boyes (309).
McDavid’s No. 97 was retired by the Otters back on Jan. 10.
McDavid and Brown were both named to the Otters Quarter-Century Team back in March.
