Oilers' Connor McDavid Reveals Main Priority Driving Major Decision

The Edmonton Oilers lost their second consecutive Stanley Cup Final and did so against the same opponent, the Florida Panthers, in the latter's third straight trip to the finals.

Now, the Oilers are entering the offseason with much more uncertainty than ever before, and it starts at the top.

Connor McDavid, the face of the NHL — let alone the franchise — since he entered the league in 2015, is now a year away from unrestricted free agency and eligible to sign a new deal starting July 1, 2025.

Even then, the Oilers captain isn’t going to rush any decision, as he made clear during his final media availability of the season on Thursday.

“If I feel that there’s a good window to win here over and over again, then signing is no problem,” McDavid said. “I’m not in a rush to make any decision, so I don’t think there needs to be any timeline.”

What might have caught Edmonton's front office's attention, however, is McDavid's statement about putting his personal priorities atop everything when the time comes to make a decision on whether to re-sign with the Oilers or test free agency.

“This core has been together for a long time, and we’ve been building to this moment all along,” McDavid said. “The work that’s gone on behind the scenes, the conversations. The endless disappointments, and you know, some good times along the way obviously as well.

"With that being said, ultimately, still need to do what’s best for me and my family.”

The 28-year-old center is already a three-time Hart Trophy winner and widely regarded as the league’s top player.

The Oilers drafted McDavid with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft, and he made an immediate impact with 48 points in 45 games during his rookie season. Through his 10-year career, McDavid has amassed 721 points in 712 regular-season games and 150 points in 96 postseason outings.
