Oilers Could Target Blues Goalie with Offer Sheet in Revenge Move, per NHL Analyst

All signs point to the Blues not having goalie Joel Hofer signed in the coming weeks, which could allow the Oilers to send an offer sheet as a revenge move.

The Edmonton Oilers could have their revenge sights set on the St. Louis Blues' offer sheets that stole Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg from them last summer. The two accepted surprising St. Louis offers, and Edmonton, after a delay, refused to match.

The duo went on to thrive with the Blues, as the Oilers labored to fill the gap, though reaching the Stanley Cup Final again. Now, Edmonton might turn the tables. Blues goalie Joel Hofer is a restricted free agent, and the Oilers are reported to want him.

With the Oilers' need for goaltending and Hofer's potential, an offer sheet might be in the cards, per NHL analyst Preston Hodgkinson.

Hofer, age 24, has shared time in St. Louis with Jordan Binnington and put up quality numbers: a .914 SV% and +10.3 GSAx in 2023-24 and a 16-8-3 record and .904 SV% last season.

The Oilers are cap-burdened and low on draft capital, however. They have one selection in the 2025 and 2026 drafts, but no 2026 first-round pick.

The catch is the Oilers offer would have to be no more than $4.68 million per year

That would make any bid of greater than $4.68 million annually impossible unless they receive that back.

Edmonton could perhaps cobble together a competitive offer; however, that is below that and would give Hofer a decent bump from his $775,000 AAV, especially with term.

This would leave the Blues in a bind: accept the offer or lose a young goalie. In either situation, the Oilers come out winners, either by getting Hofer or forcing St. Louis to possibly overpay for him by matching.

A Hofer-Skinner combination might be what Edmonton is after, and revenge would taste sweet.
