It was one of the most dominant performances from Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl during their tenure with the Edmonton Oilers.
The dynamic duo had a combined 10 points in the Oilers’ 6-5 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday night, a game that saw the two former Hart Trophy winners go toe-to-toe with the defending Stanley Cup champions.
The game also saw history be made, as McDavid became the fourth player in NHL history to record at least 30 points through the first 10 games of a season.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk is joined by The Sheet host Jeff Marek to discuss the Oilers’ win over the Hurricanes and how dominant the combination of McDavid and Draisaitl are in Edmonton.
Tyler Yaremchuk: That was one of the better October hockey games that we’ve seen in recent memory. No matter which way you dice it: with Connor McDavid, the start to the season he’s had, is having absolutely jaw-dropping. This does not happen very often: he has broken a Wayne Gretzky record. That just doesn’t happen. McDavid broke the Oilers’ franchise record for most points in the first 10 games of a season with his 31st point Thursday night.
He went into a game against the best team in the Eastern Conference, and I was sitting there going, “Hey, this is going to be a quieter night, Carolina is known for playing that tight defensive system … it was fun for McDavid to average 2.8 points per game while it lasted.”
Then what does he do? He puts up five points, and the duo of him and Leon Draisaitl combine for 10 points. They were in on every single one of Edmonton’s five goals, including a tying goal with less than 90 seconds to go to send the game into overtime.
