Oilers' Evander Kane Assigns Blame for Game 3 Loss to Panthers

The Edmonton Oilers dropped Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final to the Florida Panthers, 6-1, on Monday at Amerant Bank Arena.

The loss put Edmonton behind 2-1 in the series and raised questions about the team’s discipline and composure heading into a pivotal Game 4.

The Oilers gave up three power-play goals on 11 power-play opportunities for the Panthers, getting called for  15 minors, one major, and five misconduct penalties throughout the game for 21 total infractions.

Florida scored two goals in each period while the Oilers could only score once, at the start of the second frame, to bring the score to a hopeful 1-2 that ended up in a blowout loss.

Evander Kane, who took three minor penalties and a 10-minute misconduct before getting ejected from Game 3, pointed the blame inward.

“We didn’t play very well, that’s evident, we don’t have anybody to blame but ourselves,” Kane said. “We can definitely be a lot better.”

Kane acknowledged the Oilers lost control of the game late.

“I think the game obviously got out of hand at the end, that stuff is going to happen,” Kane said. “You look at some of the calls that were obviously frustrating. They seem to get away with it more than we do. It’s tough to find the line, they’re doing just as much stuff as we are.”

Despite the scoreline, Kane said the result was less important than the opportunity still ahead.

“We could have lost 3-2 in triple overtime and the series is 2-1,” Kane said. “How you lose in the playoffs really doesn’t matter as much that it might in the regular season. We have a shot to get a split here on Thursday and that’s the focus at this point.”

Game 4 is Thursday night in Sunrise, FL, as Edmonton is seeking to avoid going down 3-1 in the series.
