The Oilers appear to be nearing an 8-year deal with Trent Frederic valued at $4 million per year, despite his recent struggles.
Less than 24 hours removed from being knocked out of the Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers are already in offseason mode. General manager Stan Bowman has a hectic summer ahead, with several roster decisions to make.
At the top of the priority list: signing extensions for superstars Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard. But the Oilers can potentially get someone else done first.
The team is in discussions with forward Trent Frederic on a proposed eight-year extension, sources close to Edmonton Journal writer Jim Matheson say.

The news raised eyebrows. Frederic scored just four points during the playoffs and played just one regular-season game with Edmonton after Boston traded him.
He registered 18 goals and 40 points with the Bruins in 2023-24, but this season tallied just eight goals and 15 points in 57 games before injury struck.
Despite the fact that he likely played hurt throughout the playoffs, the 27-year-old possesses upside as a third-line sparkplug, not the sort typically given max-term contracts. Injury concerns merely muddy things further.
The bright side is that the term reduces the cap hit. Frederic's current salary is $2.3 million AAV, and although he should get a raise, the eight-year term may be throwing some fans and reporters off.
With NHL free agency beginning July 1, the deal could materialize fast.
