The Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers are in exact opposite positions to start their 2026-27 regular seasons, and as a result, there is already talk about the two teams connecting on a trade.

Edmonton would love to add to its group up front, while Philadelphia may have no choice but to shake things up and trade a core veteran piece. Enter Travis Konecny.

A recent report suggested that the Flyers are growing frustrated with Konecny and could approach him about waiving his no-trade clause. As a result, the hockey world has started discussing potential landing spots, and Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report has included the Oilers in that mix.

Yerdon wrote:

“Adding Konecny to the mix would be another way to throw down the gauntlet to their Western Conference rivals.

Pursuing Konecny would be a luxury for the Oilers. Given how close they are to the salary cap, acquiring him would require a creative and potentially disruptive trade. Edmonton may have limited prospect capital to offer, while moving veterans from a roster that has performed well over the past few years could require more restructuring than GM Stan Bowman wants to undertake…Adding him could be the kind of move that finally brings the Cup back to Edmonton,”

The 29-year-old Konecny just began Year 2 of the eight-year, $70 million contract extension he signed with the Flyers in 2024. He has tallied three points (three assists) in five games so far this season.

While Edmonton has been rolling offensively to start the new campaign, the team has long been searching for another top-six piece to complement Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, and Konecny would undoubtedly fit the mold.

The Oilers would have to get creative and send some money back the other way, but an opportunity to land a player like Konecny is exactly why McDavid left the team with some cap flexibility when he signed his latest extension at the same $12.5 million annual salary.

It’s now up to Bowman and company to do everything they can to take advantage of that flexibility while their championship window remains open.
