Oilers forward Evander Kane takes major step towards early return

The Edmonton Oilers took the ice for practice today and saw a fantastic sight for the first time this season - Evander Kane joining the team for a full skate.

The Oilers have lost Evander Kane for the entire season as he recovers from multiple surgeries for multiple injuries, and he has been officially ruled out until playoffs.

Evander Kane returns to Oilers practice for first time this season

Multiple Oilers reporters have shared sights of Evander Kane returning to practice today, and also appearing to skate and move pretty well.

Previous reports from TSN Insider Ryan Rishaug confirmed the Oilers had ruled Kane out before the trade deadline, which allowed the team to pursue more trades and spend into LTIR.

Prior to this appearance at practice, the Oilers veteran was still rehabbing away from the rest of the team, and had been unable to put together two solid skate sessions in a row.

My understanding is Kane hasn't put back to back days of intense workouts together, and as the deadline draws near it's perhaps becoming more apparent that a return at playoff time is more likely

Now that Kane is on the ice with the team again, he may have turned a corner with his condition. It was expected he would only be available deeper into the playoffs, but it could be sooner.

Evander Kane ramping up for earliest possible return in Game 1 of playoffs

There is only 14 games left in the regular season, and if Kane wants to be available for Game 1 of Playoffs, he'll need to get up to speed in practice - which could take a while.

When the Oilers do get Evander Kane back, it will be a massive addition to their team. The power forward led the Oilers in hits last season and potted 24 goals, all while playing through injury all year. If he's fully healthy and up to speed again, Kane can be a high impact player.

Hopefully Kane has his sights set on a return for Game 1, and doesn't have to sit out of the playoff lineup for too long.
