As the Edmonton Oilers look to build a team to get over the hump in the Stanley Cup Final, the organization also has the impending free agency of star Connor McDavid to consider. McDavid will be a free agent at the end of this coming season, and there has been a lot of speculation that he could leave the organization.
If McDavid were to become available, there would be no shortage of teams interested in landing him. McDavid is seen as one of the greatest players in NHL history, and players of his talent don't typically hit the free agent market.
There have also been reports that the Oilers would love to get him signed to a long-term deal before he were to enter the market, but nothing has come about yet. However, Oilers general manager Stan Bowman provided a massive update on the contract talks between the two sides.
"We haven't had any of those types of detailed conversations yet; I think we're very encouraged by all the conversations I've had to date; I do expect to have some conversations with them soon," said Bowman.

Everything that the Oilers do needs to have the contract of McDavid in mind. McDavid is the most important piece to the puzzle, and the team needs to prove to him that he can win a title in Edmonton.
The star will weigh all his options, and if it makes sense to sign before he can test the market, he will. But the veteran may also want the chance to see what else is out there.
With the Oilers falling short once again, the idea of McDavid testing free agency has come about even more. But for now, this all remains as pure speculation, and we should know more soon.
