Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman recently shared a revealing insight during an appearance on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer. Bowman disclosed that several player agents have approached him unsolicited, expressing their clients’ desire to play in Edmonton.
Are Players Telling Their Agents to Call the Oilers?
Bowman revealed in a conversation with the Oilers host:
“This is something I haven’t talked a lot about, but I’ve had several agents call me and tell me that their players want to come to Edmonton. Agents I’ve talked to say we have to give our list of the few places we can play, and Edmonton is on that list now. They want to come here.”
Bowman noted this shift might not have been the case in the past, — and perhaps a few players are thinking twice considering the lackluster start to the Oilers’ 2024-25 season — but it’s clear now that the Oilers are a destination team. Bowman believes this perception not only reflects well on the organization but also gives Edmonton an edge as the trade deadline approaches.
“Word is out—this is a great place to be,” Bowman added.
A Strategic Trade Advantage Suggesting the Oilers Move Slowly?
Bowman’s comments could prove crucial as teams prepare for the NHL Trade Deadline. Players with no-move or no-trade clauses often dictate their destinations, but many of those players aren’t on the market right now. Only a handful of teams, if any, know that they aren’t bound for the playoffs. In other words, the market to buy is much smaller than it will be in a few months, even a few weeks.
The Oilers are rumored to be exploring options on defense, but only a handful of names are out there in the rumor mill. Many of them don’t have trade conditions, so the Oilers are competing with every other NHL club that also wants to upgrade their blue line. However, as the season rolls along, teams will try to sell players with trade clauses. That will benefit the Oilers if what Bowman says is still true.
Bowman may find himself in a unique position if pending unrestricted free agents or players with contracts on struggling teams actively push for a move to Edmonton.
The Oilers Will Ultimately Be In a Prime Position
With the organization’s recent playoff success and a roster led by superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, it’s easy to see why players view Edmonton as a top contender. And, despite the rocky first 20 games, most insiders and analysts believe the Oilers will figure things out. They’ll need to make upgrades, but that’s where these strategic trades play a role.
Bowman emphasized that players value winning above all else. While financial considerations matter, “at the end of the day, when they look at their career, they want to be part of a winning team.” Bowman will try to leverage that as the deadline nears.
The question is how long can the Oilers hold off? If Bowman feels the need to act now, he’s limiting his options if more sellers start to emerge. Acting too early could be a mistake. That said, waiting might be an issue if the Oilers really start to struggle.

According to a report from The Athletic, the No. 29 overall pick has been drawing interest from several NCAA programs to join their team as a football player. Standing at 6-foot-6, the Minnesota native is a star in both hockey and football, tallying 49 points in 31 games at the high school level while also being a star Quarterback, and after putting up 9 points in 10 USHL games with the Fargo Force, the future is bright for him in both sports. Ultimately, at 17-years of age, the future is very bright whichever way West ends up going, but given that the Blackhawks used a first-round pick on him in this past seasons draft, they're clearly confident that they can not only keep him in hockey, but make a good NHLer out of him moving forward.

WNBA Icon Rebecca Lobo Makes Demand Involving Indiana Fever Star
All eyes were on College Park Center for Monday night’s primetime matchup between the Dallas Wings and the New York Liberty. The stars came out to support the Wings in their home matchup against the defending champs. This included Paige Bueckers’ rumored girlfriend, Azzi Fudd, who had a special message for the Dallas rookie during the game. Rebecca Lobo's Intriguing WNBA Proposal WNBA legend Rebecca Lobo was also watching the matchup intently. What caught the attention of the Hall of Fame center was the incredible performance of Wings star Arike Ogunbowale. Ogunbowale made history on Monday after a first-half performance that was literally for the books. The four-time All-Star joined Caitlin Clark as the only two players in the last 20 years to record at least 10 points and 10 assists in a single half. Ogunbowale had 15 and 10 at the break, leading Dallas to a 63-36 lead over the Liberty. Ogunbowale’s eye-catching performance drew an immediate reaction from Lobo during the game. According to the 51-year-old, she would like to see Ogunbowale go toe-to-toe against Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell. “Give us a 1-on-1 game between Arike Ogunbowale and Kelsey Mitchell during next year’s All Star Weekend,” Lobo posted on X. Ogunbowale finished the game with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, a rebound, 14 assists, one steal and two triples in 32 minutes of action. The Liberty mounted an impressive comeback attempt, but the Wings held on for a 92-82 victory. Kelsey Mitchell Has Been Tearing It Up for the Fever Much like Ogunbowale did on Monday night, Mitchell also led the charge for the Fever in their last game. The three-time All-Star went off in Sunday’s 93-78 victory against their biggest rivals, the Chicago Sky, at United Center. Mitchell dropped 35 points on the Sky on 12-of-19 from the field, along with two rebounds, six assists, three steals and seven triples. With Caitlin Clark missing time due to a lingering groin injury, Mitchell has stepped it up for the Fever, firmly establishing herself as one of the top guards in the WNBA today. Lobo clearly sees Mitchell as one of the best one-on-one players in the league, and she’s now demanding a showdown against Ogunbowale. To be clear, there is currently no one-on-one competition in the WNBA All-Star weekend. This could be something the league considers for next year’s festivities, though, and a Mitchell-Ogunbowale clash would not be a bad idea at all.
Raiders rookie WR showing he could be steal of 2025 draft
Las Vegas Raiders WR Dont'e Thornton Jr. is opening eyes at training camp, including QB Geno Smith, who appears to be trusting the rookie. Maybe that is the reason why general manager John Spytek has not looked for outside help at the position. And just maybe he got a steal from the 2025 NFL Draft. That looked evident on the first day of pads in Henderson, Nevada, where Thornton badly beat fellow rookie cornerback Darien Porter for a long touchdown, as described by The Athletic's Tashan Reed. In a piece, Reed said Thornton has been the first-string "X" receiver since OTAs and "could make an immediate impact." Thornton shared what Smith told him during training camp: "He tells me every single day, 'if you've got a one-on-one matchup, I'm coming to you,'" Smith said, as shared by Reed. "It means a lot to me. Being a rookie and just getting here ... just knowing that he believes in me a lot. It gives me a lot of motivation to keep getting better." While the headlines are more on rookie RB Ashton Jeanty for his potential big season, Thornton is making sure he is not forgotten after getting selected in the fourth round (108th overall) after leading the University of Tennessee with 661 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, Thornton is getting all the opportunities he can get, given the Raiders didn't bother to add a veteran WR. One could see why Thornton is raising eyebrows in training camp. That is a good thing because Smith is trusting Thornton's potential playmaking abilities. Thornton is one of the tallest Raiders WRs besides Collin Johnson, and that could be a big deal given the Raiders need a big target minus TEs Brock Bowers, Michael Mayer and Ian Thomas. Yet, ESPN's Mike Clay is projecting Thornton to have a quiet year with 317 receiving yards and a TD. With such low numbers, maybe that is how the Raiders would prefer it to be, anyway. Only the Raiders know what they have in Thornton. It is up to Thornton to keep the momentum going into preseason games and beyond.
