Oilers' Kris Knoblauch Hints at Potential Goalie Decision

After Game 3 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final, rumors started to fly around the Edmonton Oilers potentially changing goalies. Stuart Skinner was benched during the game in favor of Calvin Pickard after the Florida Panthers dropped five goals on 23 shot attempts.

Florida now holds a 2-1 series lead over the Oilers, with Game 4 being played at home. Edmonton has to figure something out fast, otherwise, they run the risk of falling into a tough series hole.

But heading into the pivotal Game 4, the Oilers have been considering a change to start the game. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch seemed to give a hint at who may be starting in the net for Edmonton.

"Here we've got a goaltender, 'Picks,' who has been pretty good, 6-0 in the playoffs, hasn't played," Knoblauch said. "Whether we use him again, there's a little opportunity for him to get some playing time so when we do use him he's a little more comfortable when he goes in that net.

“So, I think it's one, allowing 'Picks' some playing time just in case we do need him, choose to use him at a certain point, but also give ‘Stu’ some time off and not have him play through that circumstance."

In six games this postseason, Pickard has a 2.84 GAA and an .888 save percentage. An injury sidelined him, allowing Skinner to take back the reins. If Edmonton does go back to Pickard, it could be a boost that the team needs.

Florida has seemingly figured something out with Skinner, but the defense has also failed the goalie. Edmonton should make the final decision on who will start for them ahead of puck drop.

Game 4 is scheduled to start on Thursday, June 12, at 8 p.m. ET.
