Oilers make disappointing Devon Levi injury move

The Edmonton Oilers are facing off against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Edmonton is facing some tough injury news ahead of that contest. The club is placing goaltender Devon Levi on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday.

“Goaltender Matt Tomkins has been recalled from the (Bakersfield) Condors under emergency conditions,” the Oilers posted to X, formerly Twitter.

This is tough news for Edmonton. Levi already has six victories this year, and is tied for second in the NHL in victories. He has appeared in seven contests.

There is another reason why this is a frustrating setback. The Oilers are awfully thin at goaltender right now.

“Edmonton already has free-agent goaltending addition Frederik Andersen on the injured reserve. Tristan Jarry will start Saturday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Sportsnet reported.

Levi was injured during the team’s win over the Carolina Hurricanes in recent days. In that contest, Levi posted 22 saves but allowed five goals.

Edmonton is out to a red-hot start to the 2026-27 season. The Oilers have eight victories in 10 games, and 17 total points.

One reason for the club’s success has been Connor McDavid. The star center is leading the NHL in points and assists this season. He has 31 points on the campaign. The team will now need even more production from McDavid, as the team’s goalies get healthy.

The Oilers are still searching for their first Stanley Cup championship with McDavid. Edmonton has come ever so close in recent years. McDavid is clearly skating with confidence, as the club looks to return this year to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Oilers and Leafs play Saturday night at 7:00 ET. Toronto enters the game with a 6-4-2 record on the season.
