The Edmonton Oilers’ hot start to the 2026-27 season just hit a big snag. According to a team announcement, the Oilers placed Devon Levi on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. In a corresponding roster move, Edmonton recalled netminder Matt Tomkins on an emergency basis.

Unfortunately, there’s no mention of how Levi was injured. The 24-year-old goalie played in Edmonton’s shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes, though spectators noticed him stretching more than usual towards the end of the game. The Oilers don’t play until tomorrow, so more information will likely be available then.

Because he was injured last night, Levi is guaranteed to miss the next three games. Hopefully, for his sake and the Oilers’, that’s all it will be. The de facto starter in Edmonton, Levi has a 6-1-0 record in seven games with an .887 SV% and 3.11 GAA.

Still, that doesn’t tell the full story. In his first game with the Oilers on October 1, Levi allowed seven goals on 22 shots, resulting in a dismal save percentage. However, since then, he’s been much more formidable, posting a .913 SV% against 172 shots in six games.

Now, the Oilers will turn to a familiar face for the foreseeable future. Tristan Jarry, who was disastrous for Edmonton last season, will replace Levi as starter for now.

Although last year’s performance was not ideal, Jarry has a similar stat line to Levi this season. He allowed six goals on 29 shots in the first game of the year, but has posted a .938 SV% in two games since. If Jarry gets anything close to that over the next three games, the Oilers shouldn’t miss a beat.

Meanwhile, Tomkins is in his second year with the organization after leaving the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 32-year-old netminder has a 1-2-0 record in three games for the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors this season, while posting a .909 SV% and 2.40 GAA.
