Oilers place Max Jones on waivers

In 19 games for the Oilers after the deal, he scored a goal and an assist while averaging a little over nine minutes of ice time per game. While Jones was able to get in the lineup with the Oilers dealing with injuries, the team struggled with him on the ice, getting outscored 11-2 at five-on-five.

Jones is an unrestricted free agent after this season and earns a $1-million salary.

Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks 24th overall in the 2016 draft after a successful OHL career with the London Knights, he failed to live up to his draft status. His best offensive season in the NHL came in 2022-23 scoring nine goals and 19 points, but carved out a role with the Ducks for six seasons, appearing in 258 games scoring 31 goals and 62 points.

He signed with the Boston Bruins ahead of the 2024-25 season, appearing in seven NHL games, playing 38 with their AHL affiliate Providence Bruins. There, he put up 13 goals and 21 points prior to his trade to Edmonton.

Jones was a long shot to make the Oilers roster out of camp, given the acquisitions of David Tomasek, Quinn Hutson and Ike Howard, all of whom showed well in training camp, and the step forward Matt Savoie is showing he’s ready to take.

Now, Jones will look to bring similar success to the Oilers AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors, who play their final pre-season game Sunday evening.

NHL rosters must be set by 3 p.m. MT on Monday afternoon. A number of other players landed on waivers Sunday, including goaltenders Michael Dipetro (BOS), Cayden Primeau (CAR), Cal Petersen (MIN), Kaapo Kahkonen (MTL), Nico Daws (NJD) and Mads Sogaard (OTT). Former Oilers Matej Blumel (BOS), Tyler Pitlick (MIN), and Matt Benning (TOR). Former Los Angeles Kings winger Arthur Kaliyev, now with the Ottawa Senators, was also placed on waivers.
