The Edmonton Oilers placed forward Zach Hyman on injured reserve with a sore neck, head coach Mike Babcock told reporters Wednesday.

Hyman, 34, left Monday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings in the second period after he took a hit from Red Wings’ defenseman Andreas Englund. He appeared to hit his head against the glass and fell to the ice, then required help to the dressing room from the Oilers’ training staff.

He finished the night with two shots on goal in 8:25 of ice time.

Hyman’s injury comes soon after he missed more than two weeks due to an injury sustained during Edmonton’s regular-season opener against the Vancouver Canucks on Sept. 29. He missed six games then returned to the lineup Oct. 17 against the Utah Mammoth.

Through six games, Hyman has one goal and is averaging 17:56 of ice time. Now in his 12th NHL season, the Toronto native has 262 goals and 234 assists for 496 points in 717 regular-season games with the Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored a career-high 54 goals with Edmonton in 2023-24.

Hyman, a 2010 fifth-round pick for the Florida Panthers, also has 42 goals and 33 assists for 75 points in 106 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. He was part of the Oilers’ back-to-back Stanley Cup Final runs in 2024 and 2025, and scored a league-leading 16 goals during the postseason in 2024.

Edmonton is 8-2-2 with 18 points through their first 12 games of 2026-27. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard make up three of the NHL’s top-five point leaders going into Wednesday night, with McDavid having 34 in just 12 games.
