The Edmonton Oilers opened their second-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights with a 4-2 win on Tuesday night, rallying from an early 2-0 deficit to secure a historic fifth straight comeback victory of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Among the many headlines from the win was another historic achievement for Connor McDavid.

With two assists in the first period, including one on Corey Perry’s goal that cut the deficit to 2-1 and opened Edmonton's scoring, McDavid became just the fifth player in NHL history to record 10 or more assists in four consecutive postseasons.

The only players with longer such streaks are Wayne Gretzky (seven), Jari Kurri (six), and Mark Messier (five).

The Oilers reposted the following message from the NHL PR account on X : "Connor McDavid recorded his fourth straight postseason with 10+ assists. The only players in NHL history with a longer run are Wayne Gretzky (7), Jari Kurri (6) and Mark Messier (5). #StanleyCup"

McDavid also became the second-fastest player in NHL history to reach 90 career playoff assists, doing so in just 81 games. Only Gretzky reached the mark quicker, in 63 games, according to NHL Stats.

Just last year, during the Oilers' 2024 run through Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, McDavid already broke Gretzky’s record for most assists in a single postseason, notching 34 to surpass Gretzky's previous mark of 31.

The Oilers’ victory in Game 1 on Tuesday was sealed by late goals from Zach Hyman and Connor Brown. McDavid finished the night with two assists, extending his postseason totals to 11 assists and two goals for a league-leading 13 total points in seven games..

Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday, again at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, before the series shifts to Edmonton for Games 3 and 4.
