Oilers rookies dominate rival Flames in next gen showcase

The Edmonton Oilers rookies dominated their Battle of Alberta rival Calgary Flames rookies, defeating their foes by a score of 6-1.

Capping off a weekend of rookie camp, the Oilers travelled south to face-off against their bitter provincial rivals as part of an annual showcase that sees the two team's rookie squads face each other.

The Oilers lineup faced a trio between the pipes with; Nathaniel Day, Eemil Vinni, and Samuel Jonsson splitting the crease. They also saw a strong top line of Josh Samanski, flanked by Isaac Howard and Quinn Hutson. These are some of the Oilers top ranked prospects and on the other side faced top Flames prospects such as; Matvei Gridin, Aydar Suniev, and Andrew Basha.

It was a very strong showing from most of the Oilers top prospects, despite not having many high picks in recent years. It is a good sign to see and although you cannot extrapolate too much from a friendly match, there are a few takeaways from a game like this.

Oilers goalie pipeline looks strong

All three Oilers goalies played a period in this game and stopped a combined 26 shots against, with all except Jonsson maintained a shutout in their match time. However, even the 22 year old Swedish netminder, who has had questions about where he will play next season, only let one in.

Being able to keep the puck out while your team continues to rack up the score is something that can be difficult at times. Keeping a shutout alive is hard but in a tight game, your team naturally maintains a stronger defensive structure, going back and trying harder on defence. But, when the score is as high as it was in this game, your team can allow a lot more chances to leak through.

It is a feather in the cap of all three goalies and even the team's defensive comittment that they did not allow the Flames to come back in this outing in any meaningful way.

Josh Samanski deserves to make the NHL roster

One player that stood out in this game and who has been genuinely impressive since joining the Oilers organization last year is the 24 year old German centre, Samanski. He went from a relative unknown to a player who has practically forced his way into an NHL role in just over a calendar year.

His mature and refined two-way game , along with his flashes of offensive talent have made him into a player that could be a valuable depth piece for the Oilers. Specifically his commitment on the defensive end makes his NHL potential intriguing as a shutdown centre for the future.

In this game, he looked like a player who took a lot from his 24 game stint with the Oilers at the end of last season and who is a player that fans must keep an eye on.

Oilers rookies to keep an eye on

There are multiple rookies who impressed over the past few days with multiple players to keep an eye on. Howard, Samanski, and Hutson all have potential to make the Oilers' opening night lineup, according to general manager Stan Bowman.

There are also a few dark horse candidates to make the opening lineup and who could find themselves as a call-up option in the near future. Forwards such as; Ninth ranked Oilers prospect, Finnish centre Viljami Marjala, along with Rhett Pitlick and Owen Michaels each have interesting skills that could make them depth options at the NHL level. As well defencemen such as; Damien Carfagna and European free agent signing this summer, Tomas Cibulka.

Moving forward, some players who have made their names known are a pair of Windsor Spitfires players and Oilers' 2026 NHL Draft choices in Caden Harvey, who scored a goal, and Andrew Robinson impressed. Another 2026 Draft choice is Latvian forward Rudolfs Berzkalns who was impressive.

Although the Oilers may not have a strong prospect pool, they do have some intersting individual players who can make an NHL impact some day.
