Hutson, 24, is in his first full season of pro hockey, having a tremendous campaign with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, scoring 23 goals and 38 points in 30 games. His goal total sits second in the league, while his point total rank third. His goal total leads all rookies by nine goals, while his point total sits 10 above the next closest.
Hutson was named the AHL’s rookie of the month for December, scoring nine goals and 13 points in eight games played.
He’s earned a few callups this season, appearing in four NHL games with the Oilers, scoring one goal and averaging eight minutes of ice-time per night.
The Oilers signed him to a two-year, entry-level contract in April 2025, as the team burned the first year of his deal for him to make his NHL debut last spring, playing two games. He was signed out of the NCAA’s Boston University, where he spent three seasons, appearing in 117 games, scoring 56 goals and 114 points. His final season with the Terriers saw him score 23 goals and 50 points in 38 games.
Hutson was one of many free agents the Oilers signed last spring, including another college defenceman Damien Carfagna, who has three goals and nine points in 29 games played. They also signed a number of European free agents in David Tomášek, who had his contract terminated, as well as defenceman Arto Leppänen, and Josh Samanski.
Given Hutson’s success in the AHL this season, he’s a likely candidate to make the Oilers roster out of camp next season.
The Oilers have a number of players to sign as restricted free agents, including Spencer Stastney, Jayden Grubbe, Matvei Petrov, Roby Jarventie, and Connor Ungar, and unrestricted free agents in Adam Henrique, Jack Roslovic, Kasperi Kapanen, Curtis Lazar, Connor Ingram, Calvin Pickard, Max Jones, Samuel Poulin, James Hamblin, Leppänen and Cam Dineen.
