Oilersnation’s Summer 2025 Prospect Countdown – No. 3: Samuel Jonsson

Welcome to Oilersnation’s Top Prospect Countdown for Summer 2025. This list profiles players and goaltenders under 25 years old who have played fewer than 25 NHL games.

A recurring theme during this article series about the prospects of the Edmonton Oilers is that the team doesn’t have much in the cupboard left from Ken Holland’s tenure as general manager.

This is partially because the Oilers have been in win-now mode for years, moving draft picks and prospects for players who can help the team compete for the Stanley Cup. It also doesn’t help that two first-rouners signed offer sheets with another team just as they hit their stride in the NHL.

Still, Holland’s five drafts have yielded surprisingly little for Edmonton, which is notable given his reputation in Detroit for drafting and developing talent. That said, three prospects from his era still have a real chance to make an impact with Edmonton: Maxim Beryozkin, a 2020 fifth-rounder turned quality KHL power forward; Beau Akey, the team’s top 2023 pick with top-four NHL upside; and Samuel Jonsson, a hulking Swedish goaltender taken in the fifth round in 2022.

Whether Holland unearthed a late-round gem in Edmonton remains to be seen — but if he did, Jonsson might just be the one.

Born in Gavle, Sweden, Jonsson developed in the Stromsbro IF youth system before joining Brynas IF — one of the country’s most storied clubs — at the U16 level in 2018-19. He spent the next two seasons primarily with the U18 team, then became the starter for Brynas’ J20 Nationell squad in 2021-22, posting a .883 save percentage and a 9-20-0 record on a struggling team.

Jonsson wasn’t on the radar as an NHL prospect heading into that summer’s draft. He went unranked by major scouting services, and there were no public scouting reports when the Oilers selected him 158th overall. That year, Edmonton took Reid Schaefer with the 32nd pick and didn’t select again until the fifth round, where they chose Jonsson — a clear sign the scouting staff saw something they liked.

The following season, Jonsson joined Rogle BK’s J20 team. He posted a 13-14-0 record and a .902 save percentage in an otherwise modest regular season, but elevated his game in the playoffs, winning all six starts with a .927 save percentage and helping Rogle capture the first J20 Nationell championship in team history.

After appearing in just nine games in Sweden’s second- and third-tier pro leagues in 2023-24, Jonsson broke out with BIK Karlskoga at the Allsvenskan level the following season. He went 17-6-0 with a .922 save percentage over 24 regular-season games, then posted a .913 mark in five playoff appearances to help the team reach the semifinals. His performance earned him the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year honours.

The Oilers signed Jonsson to a three-year entry-level contract in April, making him one of six goaltenders under contract for 2025-26. With no indication of a European Assignment Clause in the deal, it appears he’ll head to North America to continue his development in either the AHL or ECHL.

Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard are set to return as Edmonton’s tandem, while Matt Tomkins was brought in to start for Bakersfield and serve as the organization’s third-stringer. That leaves Jonsson, Nathaniel Day, and Connor Ungar competing for the backup job on the Condors.

Given his previous success in Sweden’s J20 and Allsvenskan levels, there’s reason to be excited about Jonsson’s potential as a long-term goalie option for the Oilers. Of course, it’s important to remember that the 21-year-old hasn’t even made an appearance in Sweden’s top professional league. Even with the uncertainty in Edmonton’s net, Jonsson will need to put in a significant body of work in the AHL before he’s in the NHL conversation.
