Olofsson Signs, Oilers and Bruins Trade, & More NHL Rumors
Fabian Lysell, Boston Bruins (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers)

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, there are reports that Victor Olofsson is signing a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche. Meanwhile, one source noted that the Edmonton Oilers and Boston Bruins might have been talking about a trade for a winger prospect, but the trade never materialized. Finally, have the Vancouver Canucks backed away from the idea of signing Jack Roslovic as a free agent?

Olofsson Going to the Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche are signing f orward Victor Olofsson to a one-year deal worth around $1.5 million (the AAV is just speculation at this point), per reports.

After posting 15 goals and 29 points in 56 games for Vegas last season, the former Buffalo Sabres and Golden Knights winger now joins Colorado, where injuries could open more playing time. Olofsson, once a reliable secondary scorer with three 40-point seasons in Buffalo, saw his production dip before signing a single-season contract with Vegas.

Despite reported interest elsewhere and rumors that he might be headed toward signing a PTO contract, he chose to join a contender at a lower salary. At under $2 million, the Avalanche are making a low-risk, value signing with upside.

Oilers and Bruins Trade Fell Thr ough?

The Edmonton Oilers were rumored to be in trade talks with the Boston Bruins involving forward Fabian Lysell, a 2021 first-round pick whose development has stalled in the AHL. It appears that deal, if one was ever close, has fallen through.

Once projected as a top-six scorer, Lysell has played only 12 NHL games (with just three points), and his declining production may have Boston considering a move. While some analysts suggest Edmonton could be interested, questions remain about his fit and the rumored return.

The Oilers already have similar forwards in Andrew Mangiapane, Ike Howard, and Matt Savoie, and the source who first mentioned the trade suggested the Oilers might send one of two useful pieces back. David Staples of The Edmonton Journal wrote:

“The Bruins Diehards postcast mentioned Savoie and winger Vasily Podkolzin as possibilities in a Lysell trade, but it’s hard to imagine either player makes sense from an Oilers perspective.”

Speculation from Staples also hinted that a minor deal could expand into a larger trade package, potentially including prospects and Boston goalie Michael DiPietro. Nothing is imminent, but the teams remain loosely linked in offseason rumors.

Lane Hutson Snubbed From USA Hockey’s Olympic Orientation List?

Whenever a list is made that includes the best of anything, there will be debate about who gets left off. On Tuesday, debate raged over the omissions from the USA’s Olympic Orientation invite list, specifically that Lane Hutson wasn’t invited.

Hutson had a historic rookie season, finis hing top 10 in Norris Trophy voting, leading Montreal in production, winning the Calder Trophy, and excelling in the playoffs—all on a bottom-five defense. Despite being undersized, he’s consistently impressive, and the argument was that his accomplishments were ignored.

Greg Wyshynski of ESPN wrote, “Unless there’s a material reason he couldn’t attend, I don’t understand not inviting Lane Hutson to experience U.S. Olympic development camp.”

Canucks Cool Interest in Roslovic, Eye Trade Market for Center Upgrade

As per Thomas Drance of The Athletic, the Vancouver Canucks have cooled their pursuit of unrestricted free agent Jack Roslovic, viewing him as unlikely to address their need down the middle. Drance writes:

“The Canucks seem to have emerged from that process with a sense of conviction that between a healthy Filip Chytil and the late-season emergence of Aatu Räty, the club has enough at centre to stay in control in the short term if necessary, and that a centre-capable option, like Roslovic, isn’t likely to be the full-time answer the club requires down the middle of its forward group anyway.”

While still exploring options, the Canucks now see the trade market as a more realistic path to acquire a middle-six center.
