On March 5, 2021, the Blackhawks defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in a shootout.
The Lightning jumped ahead thanks to goals by Anthony Cirelli and Alex Killorn, but Alex DeBrincat got one back for the Blackhawks in the first period. DeBrincat struck again with the only goal of the middle frame. Ryan McDonagh restored Tampa Bay's lead in the third period, but Dominik Kubalik potted the equalizer for Chicago.
Philipp Kurashev scored the only goal of the shootout and Malcolm Subban stopped all three Lightning attempts on top of 39 saves to give the Blackhawks a home win.
Bill Thoms, a 13-year NHL forward, was born on March 5, 1910. Thoms spent parts of seven seasons with the Blackhawks in the 1940s. The Ontario native scored 175 points (63 goals, 112 assists) in 253 regular-season games and added one assist in four playoff games with Chicago.
