2024-25 season

There aren’t many expectations for seventh-round picks. The chances of them making an NHL roster are slim. If a player drafted in the seventh round hits, great. If they don’t, it’s not much of a big deal. Insert Kaleb Lawrence. His 6’6″ size made him an intriguing option for the LA Kings, despite only playing two games in his draft year (2022), for the Kings to select him in the seventh round (215th overall).

Lawrence split time in the ECHL with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits and the Ontario Reign. With the Reign, he played primarily as their fourth-line center, as well as in some special teams moments. The 22-year-old towering forward was sparingly used when with the Reign, but finally carved out a full-time role with the club during Ontario’s weekend series against the Colorado Eagles at the end of March. In those two Reign victories, Lawrence established a physical presence and earned the trust of Marco Sturm down the stretch.

In the final 11 games for the Reign, Lawrence picked up two fights, 22 minutes of penalties, and finished the season by recording a goal in each of the final three regular-season games. He played in one playoff game and recorded one shot on goal. Considering his season, he wasn’t too bad, which is fine for a seventh-round pick, given the expectations and Lawrence’s chances of making the NHL roster not being very high.
